What Is Temazcal?

Temazcal at Hacienda Encantada Resort & Residences
A Temazcal is a small, round chamber into which red-hot stones are placed in the middle of the brick or rock floor. The hot stones are splashed with medicinal herb-infused water, releasing a healing steam. Ancient doctrines say that when you enter the Temazcal, you revert to the state you enjoyed in your mother's womb. This phenomenon is represented by the goddess Temazcaltoci who is known to heal all physical, spiritual, mental and moral ailments.
Temazcal has been used for centuries to treat a variety of maladies including bronchitis, prostate issues, rheumatoid arthritis, liver problems and circulatory issues. It relieves stress, reduces muscle tension and releases negative energy from the body by cleansing through profuse sweating. The sweat stimulates the internal organs to rid the body of toxins, free radicals and the artificial preservatives we ingest every day. Due to its intensely spiritual nature, Temazcal requires an attitude of humility, respect and surrender throughout the treatment.
Each Temazcal session 90 minutes and requires four guests per session. You should refrain from eating for at least one hour prior to treatment, wear proper attire of shorts or swimwear during the treatment and drink plenty of water and fluids before and after. Immediately after your Temazcal treatment, a cold water bath is required. While Temazcal is a beneficial holistic treatment, it is not recommended for pregnant women, anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs, children under 12 years of age, or anyone with:
