THE TEMAZCAL

You'll want to tell your friends about this experience. Temazcal is a native health ritual that originated in the early cultures of Mexico and Central America. In the native Nahuatl language, "Temazcal" means "house of steam" (Temaz - steam, calli - home).

The Temazcal is a small rounded chamber. Inside red-hot stones are placed in a hole located in the middle of the brick or rock floor. The stones are then splashed with water infused with medicinal herbs. According to the ancient doctrine, when we enter the Temazcal, we return to the womb of our mother, represented by the great goddess Temazcaltoci, the principal deity of Indian healers. Temazcaltoci is benevolent and health-conscious just as our own mother would be. She heals all our ailments, physical, mental, moral and spiritual.
In this healing ritual, the four elements (earth, water, wind and fire) are employed as powerful cleansers. With an attitude of humility and gratitude, we thank our mother earth for all we have and ask for her assistance in removing from us all that we no longer need.

The Temazcal is a powerful therapy for the treatment of many acute or chronic illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, bronchitis, thyroid disorders and problems with the prostate, liver, lungs and digestive and circulatory systems.

The healing process stimulates all the internal organs, cleansing the body through profuse sweating. Toxins, free radicals and artificial preservatives from food are eliminated. The Temazcal also reduces muscle tension, relieves stress and releases negative energy.
Proper attire is recommended. Women should wear shorts or swimwear. Men shorts or a swimsuit.

For the Temazcal to be effective, an attitude of respect, humility and surrender is important. Do not eat at least one hour in advance. Drink plenty of fluids before and after the session. Bathe with cold water immediately after the session. Relax and be aware of how you feel. If you must exit the sweat lodge, please inform the leader.

Not recommended for people with:
